Best Time to Visit Rajasthan: Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur and Jaisalmer Month by Month

"Winter" is the lazy answer for when to visit Rajasthan. Here's how Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur and Jaisalmer actually differ month by month, and which circuit fits which window.

Best Time to Visit Rajasthan: Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur and Jaisalmer Month by Month

"When's the best time to visit Rajasthan?" has a lazy one-word answer — winter — and that's not wrong exactly, but it also flattens four very different cities into one blanket recommendation. Jaisalmer's desert nights, Udaipur's lake-city calendar, Jaipur's festival crowds and Jodhpur's blue-city heat each behave a little differently across the year. Here's the breakdown we actually use when pacing our own Rajasthan circuits.

The short answer, with the honest caveat

October through March is the comfortable window across the state — daytime temperatures sit in a pleasant range for sightseeing, and it's when most forts, havelis and desert safaris are genuinely enjoyable rather than an endurance test. December and January are the most popular months, which also means the highest hotel prices and the thickest crowds at marquee sights like Amber Fort and Mehrangarh. If you can travel in October-November or February-March, you get nearly the same weather with noticeably fewer people.

Jaipur and the Jaipur-Ajmer-Pushkar circuit

Jaipur's winter mornings can carry a layer of fog that occasionally delays early starts, so if your itinerary includes a dawn visit to Amber Fort, build in a little flexibility in December-January. Pushkar's camel fair (usually November) is worth timing a trip around if you want to see it, but it also means Pushkar itself gets genuinely crowded that week — plan accommodation well ahead. Outside winter, Jaipur's pink sandstone architecture gets brutally hot by April, and the city is best avoided May through June unless you're committed to an indoor-heavy itinerary.

Jodhpur and Jaisalmer: the desert circuit changes the calculation

This pairing is where the "just go in winter" advice matters most literally. Jaisalmer's desert camps drop to genuinely cold nights in December-January — pack real layers, not a light jacket, if you're sleeping in the dunes. Jodhpur, sitting a little less deep into the Thar, is marginally milder but still cold enough after dark in peak winter to catch first-time visitors off guard. Both cities become punishingly hot from April onward, with Jaisalmer's open desert terrain offering no real relief from the sun on a safari.

Udaipur: the one city where off-season isn't a write-off

Udaipur's lakes and palace views actually hold up reasonably well in the shoulder months either side of winter, since its lake-facing setting takes some of the edge off the heat compared to the open desert cities. Monsoon (July-September) brings the lakes to their fullest and the surrounding hills green up, which some travelers specifically chase for photography, though a few palace-adjacent activities can be weather-dependent that time of year.

Matching the month to your circuit

If you're doing our Jaipur, Ajmer and Pushkar trip, aim for November (fair season, if you want it) or February-March for a quieter version. For the desert-heavy Jodhpur and Jaisalmer trip, stick firmly to October-February and pack for cold desert nights. If your plan includes Udaipur and Chittorgarh or the standalone Udaipur escape, winter is still safest, but Udaipur is the one city on this list where a well-planned monsoon trip isn't a mistake.

Frequently asked questions

What is the overall best month to visit Rajasthan?

November through February gives the most reliably comfortable weather across all four cities, with November and February offering the same comfort as the peak December-January window but smaller crowds.

Is Rajasthan too hot to visit in summer?

Yes, for most travelers. April through June brings extreme heat, especially in the desert cities of Jodhpur and Jaisalmer, and is best avoided unless your itinerary is largely indoor or air-conditioned.

Should I visit Rajasthan during monsoon?

It depends on the city. Udaipur handles monsoon reasonably well thanks to its lakes and hills; the desert cities of Jodhpur and Jaisalmer don't offer much relief from humidity and occasional heavy rain disrupts desert-safari plans.

Are Jaisalmer desert nights really that cold in winter?

Yes — this catches a lot of first-time visitors off guard. Pack proper warm layers for a December-January desert camp stay, not just a light jacket.

When is Pushkar's camel fair, and does it affect travel planning?

It's usually held in November. It's a great reason to visit, but Pushkar gets significantly more crowded and pricier for accommodation that week, so book well ahead if you want to attend.

Plan your Rajasthan trip

We run circuits across all four cities with timing built around each city's actual seasonal quirks, not a generic "winter is best" rule. Explore Jaipur, Ajmer and Pushkar, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer, Udaipur and Chittorgarh, the Udaipur escape, or see everything on our trips page.
