Weekend Getaways from Bangalore: Coorg and Chikmagalur, Honestly Compared

Every Bangalore weekend-getaway roundup bundles Coorg and Chikmagalur into one generic list. Here's what a real Friday-night-departure trip to each actually looks like, and how to pick.

In this article

Most Bangalore weekend-getaway lists are 10-destination roundups. This isn't one of those.

Search "weekend getaways from Bangalore" and you'll get the same 10-destination listicle repeated across a dozen sites — Coorg, Chikmagalur, Coorg again with different photos, Wayanad, Ooty, all bundled with no real logistics. We run group departures to both Coorg and Chikmagalur most weekends, so instead of another list, here's what a real Friday-night departure actually looks like for each, and the honest trade-offs between them.

The logistics: what a real Friday night departure looks like

Both Coorg and Chikmagalur sit in the 250–270 km range from Bangalore, and both are realistic as a Friday-night-out, Sunday-night-back trip if you leave promptly. A departure around 10–11 PM on Friday gets a group into Coorg or Chikmagalur by early morning, in time for a few hours of sleep before the day starts — which matters more than it sounds, because a trip that starts groggy at 7 AM feels very different from one where everyone's had even four hours of rest. The return leg on Sunday is the one people underestimate: leaving Chikmagalur or Coorg by 4–5 PM still gets you into Bangalore late, with weekend traffic on NH275 or the Mysore route adding a real hour or more compared to a weekday drive. Plan the return time backward from when people actually need to be at work Monday, not from when the trip "feels done."

Coorg: the well-rounded weekend

Coorg gives you more variety in less driving. Abbey Falls sits close to Madikeri and works as an easy first stop; the Dubare Elephant Camp on the Kaveri is a genuinely good half-day activity for a group that wants something other than viewpoints; and the coffee-and-spice plantation stays give the trip a slower, more relaxed character than a pure trekking weekend. Coorg's trekking is real but comparatively gentle — Tadiandamol, its highest point, is an 8 km round trip that most reasonably fit people manage in 4–5 hours without technical difficulty. If your group wants a mix of sightseeing, a light trek, and downtime rather than a hard physical goal, Coorg is the easier weekend to plan around.

Chikmagalur: the trek-first weekend

Chikmagalur is the pick if trekking is the actual point of the trip, not a side activity. Mullayanagiri, Karnataka's highest peak, is the headline draw, and the wider trail network around it — including routes near Kudremukh — gives genuinely more elevation and variety than anything Coorg offers. Hebbe Falls and Baba Budangiri round out a weekend, but the honest framing is: come to Chikmagalur because you want a trek with a real payoff at the top, and treat everything else as a bonus around it rather than the main event.

So which one for your group?

If your group is split on fitness levels, or some people want a light trek and others just want plantations and waterfalls, Coorg's variety absorbs that mismatch better. If everyone's aligned on wanting an actual trek with a summit at the end, Chikmagalur delivers a better version of that specific experience. Neither is the "better" destination in general — they're built for different weekends, and we'd rather match the trip to what your group actually wants than push one over the other by default.

Around 250–300 km, generally a similar 5–6 hour drive to Coorg, though the exact route and time depend on which part of Chikmagalur you're headed to.

Which is better for trekking, Coorg or Chikmagalur?

Chikmagalur, without much debate — Mullayanagiri and the surrounding trail network offer more elevation, distance and variety than Coorg's shorter, easier treks like Tadiandamol.

Can I do a Bangalore-to-Coorg or Chikmagalur trip in one weekend?

Yes, both work as a Friday-night-out, Sunday-night-back trip. Leave Bangalore by 10–11 PM Friday and plan your Sunday return by mid-afternoon to account for weekend traffic.

Is Coorg or Chikmagalur better for a mixed-fitness group?

Coorg generally, since its combination of light trekking, plantation visits and the elephant camp gives people with different energy levels something to do without anyone being left out.

What's the best time to visit Coorg or Chikmagalur?

Post-monsoon through winter (October to February) works well for both — waterfalls are still strong from the monsoon runoff and trekking conditions are cooler and drier than in summer.
